Valentine's Day History

  • Likely originated as ancient Roman celebration of Lupercalis (a pagan fertility festival) on February 15th.

  • The feast day of 2 Roman martyrs of the 3rd Century AD, both named St. Valentine, was February 14th.

  • St. Valentine is known as the patron saint of lovers.

  • The Christian church likely coaxed the transition from this pagan festival of fertility, to that of celebrating the patron saint of lovers.

  • St. Valentine became an increasingly popular saint by the middle ages.

  • By the mid-1700s, exchanging small gifts or handwritten cards became common in England and America.

  • Eventually mass produced Valentine's cards and inexpensive postage made sending Valentine's Day the popular holiday it now is.
